Pictures of Nebaj and Surrounding Area
Some pictures are of Río Azul, a town created by the military government during the civil war of the 1960s-1990s. These were called villas modelo, not unlike the strategic hamlets created by the U.S. government during its invasion of Vietnam. The government would move villagers of various Mayan ethnic groups from different parts of Guatemala into these towns. They were used to control the population and to destroy indigenous cultures.
